Welcome to Rising Sun Jiu-Jitsu

Welcome to Rising Sun Jiu-Jitsu!  Your children will have a blast learning our fun, safe, and effective sefl-defense ci\urriculum. Our training will provide your children wit hthe discipline, confidence, and leadership qualities that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

At Rising Sun, we don't teach how to fight. We teach children how to defend. This takes the form of practical Jiu-Jitsu techniques to defend from bullies and strangers, as well as the life skills that will help them win the fight before it even starts - by avoiding it entirely.

Anthony and son AJ

"Rising Sun Jiu-jitsu has made a positive impact on my son. I have noticed several positive changes in his behavior. He is more assertive and confident both at home and at school. My son is confident in his ability to defend himself from bullying. Sensei Watts does an incredible job with his students instilling self- confidence and building character." - Anthony Haywood

The Bachman family.

"We love Rising Sun Jiu-Jitsu! Both our children have learned so much self-confidence and compassion for others since joining the RSJJ family! Sensei Dean and Sensei Osko are both amazing with children and work hard to teach not only martial arts but other important values that we see them using both at home and school. Rising Sun is #1!!  -Eva-Marie and Jess Bachman

The Simmons Family

"We first met sensei Dean of Rising Sun almost 2 years ago at an after school program at my son's school and we have loved it ever since. Rising Sun encompasses teaching the students respect, self defense, self confidence and to never give up and always do your best no matter what. I am proud to say that my son is very respectful both at home and at school, he feels confident with the tools he has been given to defend himself against bullies and strangers and he strives to be the best that he can be. We are proud to be part of the RSJJ family!"  -Melina and Robert Simmons

Joaquin and Jorge Cevallos

"Joaquin has always been a fun-loving, creative and energetic child.  But he was also very shy and timid as a little boy.  For example, when it came to situations where he had to be the center of attention such as presenting at a show-and-tell at his elementary school, or if he was attempting a new activity he was not quite familiar with, he would be very hesitant or would not try.

Well, things started to change for the better when Joaquin joined Rising Sun Jiu-Jitsu in the spring of 2015.  Joaquin began to get involved in something new that he was interested in:  K-A-R-A-T-E!!  Well, he soon began to learn that Kumi-Uchi Jiu-Jitsu was a bit more than just punch, kick and block.  With martial art skill and know-how, insightfulness, knowledge of group dynamics with a touch of firmness with fairness and lessons of respect, Sensei Dean and his staff helped slowly mold Joaquin’s ability to come out of his shell.  Joaquin quickly picked up on the athleticism and unique customs of Kumi-Uchi Jiu-Jitsu, but also began to engage in group dynamics where he had to engage in different levels of martial art activities.

As Joaquin advanced in his art and climbed the belt system, he started to develop faith in his new found abilities in Jiu-Jitsu.  By leading the Class Creed, training with different students, present himself in class such performing the blocking system, participating in group games, and helping others, Joaquin soon started to feel stronger in his role as a Rising Sun student.  It did not take too long for these new skills and traits to start having some sort of an effect.  Joaquin’s confidence grew at Rising Sun, and so too did it also become evident that his confidence would grow outside the dojo.  His behavior and attitude was developing in a very positive way in different environments such as in the home, school and in public.

Joaquin’s behavior sprouted in school as a result of his experiences at Rising Sun.  He started to become a well-rounded boy.  For example, he started speaking up when permitted, raising his hand more to participate in class, lead in a class activity or present to the class.  Joaquin also began engaging more with people in and outside the home.  He developed enough confidence to independently choose things he was interested in such as joining extracurricular activities in school (e.g.-the garden, Lego, science and band clubs).  He also started to engage a student if he or she felt like they “just could not get it” or wanted to give up. Joaquin started to have the confidence to step up and lend a hand.

I am very proud of Joaquin.  It is not only that he has followed my footsteps where I was trained by the late great Shihan Rocco Parrillo, but that he has also benefited from the good teachings of the dojo which has supplemented what his mom and me do at home.  It is in my strong opinion that without Rising Sun’s good teachings, Joaquin would not be the person he is today."   -Jorge Cevallos
